Many airlines use generic Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and these are powerful tools for large organizations. However, we know from our customers that generic software like this often falls short when it comes to aviation fuel management activities and their very specific requirements.

In fact, 98% of our customers use ERP systems but still use the FuelPlus platform for fuel management. This includes major airlines like Deutsche Lufthansa, British Airways, Japan Airlines and KLM. Clearly FuelPlus offers them something that generic ERP software doesn’t. So what is it?

We’ve set out our own thoughts on this before in the blog, Why aviation fuel management requires specialized software, but having just launched our latest solution, FuelPlus Cloud, we decided to talk directly about why they rate the FuelPlus platform. Here are the top reasons they gave.

1. Specialized features

FuelPlus Cloud is built specifically for the aviation fuel management industry, unlike generic ERPs. This means it includes a range of very specialized features including:

2. Advanced analytics

New to FuelPlus Cloud is our advanced analytics application and it’s extremely popular with our customers. As with all of our features, the inspiration for it came from issues we observed when working closely with airlines. We saw it was often hard for them to get valuable insights from the data held in ERPs or other non-specialized systems — either because the interface wasn’t intuitive, or because they needed extensive IT support to be able to see the data that was important to them.

We decided to tackle this issue head-on in FuelPlus Cloud and built an analytics platform that puts the power of analytics in everyone’s hands, including non-technical teams. It’s the only business intelligence software for fuel that lets users easily combine large datasets using drag-and-drop functionality.

The analytics application then blends and analyzes this ‘big data’ (at ten times the speed of current solutions) and translates it into actionable business intelligence using easy-to-understand maps, charts, graphs and gauges. Users can easily build their own interactive dashboards and business intelligence reports so they can focus on the KPIs that matter to them and set up alerts to keep them informed.

3. Expert support and guidance

Software isn’t everything. Many airlines tell us that they like working with us because, as well as giving them powerful technology, we provide the expertise to help them get the most out of it.

Our expertise is built on experience of the industry. Since 2000, we have been working with leading carriers to transform their fuel management processes. This has enabled us to develop industry best practices and methods, which are embedded into our solutions. For example, we know just how to find the ‘best available data’ to understand prices, forecast accurately, report on the right actuals and correctly reconcile invoices.

We also know what it takes to run a successful implementation with an airline. We’ve developed a rigorous implementation protocol which has been tried and tested. It only takes around 12–16 weeks and we have a 100% success rate. Other vendors may promise this but ask them how many airline implementations they’ve done before.

We also provide ongoing support after go-live, through our proactive customer success teams, who offer training, regular health checks, and advice on how to get the most from features.

4. Easy integration with other systems

We understand that effective fuel management relies on consolidating data from right across the airline and beyond. That’s much easier to do when you use a fuel management platform that works well with other systems.

We also realise that other solutions have their own strengths and FuelPlus can complement these. ERP systems often perform well for accounting tasks while commodity/risk management software is ideal for hedging. Therefore, we’ve made sure that FuelPlus Cloud can integrate easily with a range of systems commonly used by airlines, and our customers really value this.

For example, the platform is already set up to receive data imports from sources such as these:

5. Simple, affordable pricing

Many mid-sized and small airlines can’t afford the high costs associated with some fuel management systems. With FuelPlus Cloud, we offer simple and affordable packages for airlines of all sizes.

With our new software as a service model, pricing is fairer and transparent with no nasty surprises further down the line. The key features are:
