FuelPlus has recently been featured in Aerospace Tech Review, a publication that accompanies Aerospace Tech Week. In an article called ‘Fueling Profitability’ (Winter 2019), author Louise Bonnar looks at the technological solutions available to help carriers reduce fuel consumption, maximize fuel efficiency and manage fuel costs more carefully.

The piece discusses new-generation aircraft and fuel efficiency software such as Opti Flight and SkyBreathe, alongside FuelPlus Cloud. Our VP Commercial, Michael Charalambous, is quoted extensively. He explains how FuelPlus Cloud helps carriers improve fuel efficiency by optimizing their fuel and cost management processes, using elements of automation.

In the article, Charalambous highlights the risks of fuel management errors and of relying on manual processes: “Imagine an airline turning over ~$2B a year. If 5% of this is profit, that equates to roughly $100M, meaning $1.9B is costs. It is generally acknowledged that fuel is 30% of an airline’s cost. For this scenario, that works out at $570M. On the face of it, a small error in fuel management, say 1-3%, seems minor but if you look at the figures it’s a significant portion of the profit: $6M -18M, almost 20% of the airline’s profit margin.

“On the face of it, a small error in fuel management, say 1-3%, seems minor but if you look at the figures it’s a significant portion of the profit…almost 20%.”

Charalambous also explains the problems of manually trying to match hundreds of thousands of invoice lines with corresponding fuel tickets, which can cause pricing errors of up to 10%.

FuelPlus Cloud

Overall, the piece highlights the variety of benefits that FuelPlus Cloud offers, including:

The article also illustrates FuelPlus Cloud’s capabilities for integration with other airline systems, including the Electronic Flight Bag, the flight operations control system or ACARS ground host. Mike explains that this means airlines can “explore all the dimensions surrounding fuel costs and can add data from previously unconnected systems” to see if there is any “causality relationship” between them.
