FuelPlus held EU ETS Workshop during April 2009
On April 28th, 2009, consortium partners FuelPlus, Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA), and Cap Gemini held an airline workshop on the new regulations imposed by the EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
The three partner companies provide airlines with a complete emissions solution, including consulting, IT solution, and verification. The workshop focused on the preparation of airline monitoring plans, which will describe an airline’s approach on how to gather the necessary information for tonne-kilometres and emissions, and on how to ensure the correctness of data.
The deadline for the preparation of monitoring plans is August 31, 2009. Airlines failing to submit a plan will not receive any free emission shares, resulting in several million dollars of additional costs, which will affect the competitiveness of the airline.
The feedback on the workshop was very positive. Participants welcomed the workshop’s approach of not only explaining the EU ETS, but also working on templates for monitoring plans, provided in a similar format as they will be issued by the EU. Thus, the workshop provided "hands-on" examples for airlines and allowed the participants to exchange their opinions and ideas.
The presentation of the EU ETS module which FuelPlus will offer as an additional module for the FuelPlus EFM solution also appealed the participants. With this module, emissions data are brought to a logical vicinity of the data that cause the emissions – fuel. The FuelPlus EU ETS solution will also be made available as a standalone solution for airlines that are not yet using FuelPlus for their fuel management.
