DHL selects FuelPlus for fuel management needs

DHL North America has become the latest airline to select FuelPlus Enterprise Fuel Management for its fuel software, and the company is exploring implementing FuelPlus in Europe as well.

As the newest member of the FuelPlus family, DHL North America began looking at upgrading its fuel management structure when it brought in Gary Voss to be its Global Fuel Director in November 2006. "We didn't have a system - that was the problem," said Voss.

DHL was investigating FuelPlus in North America when partner Polar Air Cargo chose the system last year. DHL took a 49 percent stake in Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Inc.'s Polar Air Cargo unit in October 2006 for 119 million euro. After the transaction, the two units began cooperating more.

"Polar was already using FuelPlus when we were doing our research, and we decided to have the same system," said Voss. "One of the efficiencies we get is to have one system allowing us to see the same reports no matter where we look."

DHL expects to be operational in the U.S. with FuelPlus in January 2009. Voss, who also manages fuel programs for DHL in Europe, said there is a separate evaluation for FuelPlus in Europe, since DHL there has been using its in-house developed software called FuelPro. "It's primarily an invoicing system, and we're leaning towards FuelPlus to replace it."
