printpdf Emissions Module

The FuelPlus/EFM Emissions module supports the correct calculation of tonne-kilometer data and CO2 emissions for all flights operated under ETS and the generation of related annual reports. The module imports actual flight records, fuel uplift messages and load sheet data in order to calculate tone-kilometer, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for each operated flight and each type of fuel used. The calculation is done in line with the EU ETS regulations using the best available information including fuel on board, shutdown fuel, uplift volumes coming from ACARS, flight logs, telex messages or fuel tickets, and actual density as reported for each fueling. In case of missing actual data the module can use statistical numbers calculated internally. Based on the type of fuel used, the module calculates the CO2 emission for each flight using fuel consumption and the fuel type’s specific emission factor.

Additionally, the module supports the emission forecast calculation using airline’s future flight schedules and statistical fuel consumption / emission per sector and aircraft type. Further, the module provides reports that combine actual and forecasted emissions in order to generate an outlook for the full year. Variance reporting to compare planned vs. actual emissions on a flight-by-flight basis completes the Emissions module.

Emissions areas supported:

General Base Data Management

  • Manage companies: Administer base data for the airlines which fall under an emission trading scheme.
  • Manage locations: Setup departure and destination locations including IATA and ICAO codes, time zones, and their geographic coordinates required to calculate great circle distances.
  • Manage countries: Keep track of the location countries and indicate if a country is subject to an ETS scheme (e.g. EU ETS, US ETS).
  • Manage areas: Areas are a collection of related locations. Use system-maintained areas for emission reporting or define own areas.

Operational Base Data Management

  • Manage aircraft types: Administer the aircraft types in operation including typical fuel consumption, fuel product used, and economy factor.
  • Manage aircrafts: Keep track of the fleet of aircraft including registration, seat configuration, and history of owner, operator, and fuel cost payee.
  • Manage leg data: Use system-maintained list of operated legs (sectors) per aircraft type including great circle distance, statistical fuel uplift and consumption, and theoretical fuel figures.

Operations

  • Load actual flights: System loads actual (operated) flights using automated data interfaces.
  • Capture and maintain actual flights: User can manually enter und update actual flights.
  • Generate volume estimations for actual flights: System generates for each actual flight a fuel uplift and consumption estimation which is based on statistical (average), theoretical, or block hour based data.
  • Calculate great circle distance for actual flights: System calculates for each actual flight the great circle distance using departure and destination location data.
  • Load standard fuel message: System loads fuel message data for actual flight events coming from different sources such as ACARS, flight log, or telex using automated data interfaces.
  • Capture and maintain standard fuel message: The user can manually capture fuel messages for actual flight events.
  • Load fuel ticket: System loads fuel tickets as published by into plane operators and fuel suppliers using automated data interfaces.
  • Capture and maintain fuel ticket: The user can manually capture fuel tickets as published by into plane operators and fuel suppliers.
  • Capture and maintain maintenance report: The user can capture fueling and defueling activities done during maintenance and without relation to an actual flight.
  • Link actual fuel message to actual flight: System links fuel documents to the respective actual flight event using a predefined hierarchy of data sources.
  • Calculate fuel consumption and CO2 emission for actual flights: System calculates fuel consumption and related CO2 emissions for each actual flight event in line with EU ETS regulations using best available data from fuel messages and fuel tickets. In case of missing actual fuel data the system uses statistical data as substitute values.
  • Calculate statistical uplift and consumption per sector and aircraft type: System calculates on a regular basis statistical fuel uplift and consumption figures to be used as estimates in case of missing actual fuel data.
  • Load load-sheet data: System loads load-sheet data including number of passengers, checked luggage, freight, and mail using an automated data interface. The load-sheets are automatically assigned to the respective actual flights.
  • Capture and maintain load-sheet data: User can manually capture load-sheet data for actual flights.
  • Calculate TKM for actual flight event: System calculates tonne-kilometre data for each actual flight using available load-sheet data and great circle distance.

Verification

  • Flight completeness report: System matches EUROCONTROL flight plans with actual flights available in the system and reports any discrepancies between the two data sets.

Emission Planning

  • Load flight schedule plan: System loads airline flight schedules in SSIM format using an automated data interface.
  • Create individual forecast plan: User can combine individual flight schedules in a volume forecast plan. System calculates a fuel consumption and emission forecast using statistical fuel figures.
  • Maintain individual forecast plan: User can maintain an individual forecast plan, add additional flight schedules, and initiate a recalculation of forecasted volumes.
  • Update company forecast plan with individual forecast plan: User can update the company forecast plan using an individual forecast plan. The company forecast plan reflects the confirmed forecasted consumption and emissions as published by the planning department.

Emissions Reporting

  • Actual flight report: System provides a report on actual flights containing flight details, fuel uplift, consumption, CO2 emission and TK data.
  • Annual TK report as per MRV guideline: System provides a report containing annual TK data in the detail level as required by the MRV guideline.
  • Annual emission report as per MRV guideline: System provides a report containing annual emission data in the detail level as required by the MRV guideline.
  • Forecasted emissions per planned flight: System provides a report containing the forecasted fuel consumption and emissions per planned flight.
  • Forecasted monthly emissions per area, leg, fleet, calculation type: System provides a report containing forecasted emissions by different selection criteria such as area, leg, or fleet.
  • Emission difference between two forecast plans: System provides a report containing the difference in fuel consumption and emissions between two forecast plans.
  • Emission for combined past and future period: System provides a report containing the combined past and forecasted consumption and emissions for a given period.
  • Variance between actual and forecasted emissions: System provides a report containing the variance between the forecasted and actual emissions.
