Airlines face short- and medium-term challenges to comply with the EU Emissions Trading Scheme in the cycle and deadlines that have been established.
In the short term, airlines will need to set up a structure in order to implement the ETS compliance cycle within their organization. The implementation not only will cover the set up and audit of processes specific for ETS, but also the installation of systems that take care of processing ETS-relevant data and their transformation into information required for emission reporting. Both, processes and ETS-related data will need to undergo verification by an authorized verifier.
In the medium term, airlines will want to use their CO2 performance data for their operations and better management of their business, opening the opportunity of transforming the organization into becoming more green. Further, airlines need to manage their allowance accounts and include the costs of emissions in their fuel cost reporting due to the impact of CO2 emission costs on the bottom line.
