The EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which was established in 2003 as one of the most important instruments of EU’s climate policy, is designed to cover large industrial CO2 sources.
In July 2008, the European Parliament voted in favor of including the aviation industry in EU ETS, which forces airlines to monitor, report, and evaluate CO2 emissions starting in January 2010.
All airlines operating to, from, and within EU Member States have to legally comply with the new rules of EU ETS. By August 2009, each airline has to file a monitoring plan to show how they prepare to track, report, and verify tonne-kilometre data and CO2 emissions.
